Thirty

As I write this post, Noah is closer to 31 months than 30 months, but hey, like I always say, better late than never, right? It’s been a crazily busy month, but then again, when has it not been?

Noah had a lot of growing up to do this past month, as he started school, and struggled to come to terms with the fact that mummy can’t stay in the classroom with him. He had a wonderful first day there, but started bawling the next day, and the first week was a really painful one for all involved. We tried bribing him with presents and treats, then threatening to punish him if he continued crying, but nothing worked. When I asked him why he cried in school, he would tell me tearfully, “I want mama. I miss mama.”

Day 3: Fell asleep while crying on the way home from school

The other big change in Noah’s life is that I no longer nurse him before his nap. On the 1st of January 2015, I decided to put him straight into his cot for his nap, without nursing him, and telling him that he was now a big boy. He whined a little, but agreed to let me pat him to sleep, which I did. More than a month later, he still tries his luck by asking to “drink mummy’s milk” before his nap every day. Most of the time, he is content with holding his favourite cars, and having me pat him to sleep, but there are days when he cries for what seems like forever, and C has, on more than one occasion, asked me to “just give him lah”, because he can’t take the crying anymore. I’ve refused to cave, because I don’t want my efforts to go to waste, and also because I really don’t think I have much milk left anyway. Noah still refuses to drink any formula milk, and isn’t too keen on fresh milk either, so it’s definitely going to be a real challenge trying to wean him completely. It’s tough enough just weaning him from one feed per day! Initially, I would tell him, “You can do it! Just sleep!” when he cried, and the poor boy would sob, “I can’t do it! I can’t do it!”

Noah received a few Duplo sets for Christmas, and has been really busy playing with them recently. It’s so nice watching him build on his own. He has gained more confidence in creating whatever he wants, and beams proudly when he shows us his creations.

Noah has been asking to feed himself more, most likely because he does so in school. For breakfast, he usually asks for donuts, cupcakes, or fried beehoon with fishballs, and eats them on his own. He creates a pretty big mess when he eats beehoon, but is pretty competent with donuts, because I cut them up into bite-sized pieces for him. He bugs me constantly to bake “plain yellow cupcakes” for him, and helps me to sieve the flour, and add the eggs in, when I bake.

Now that Noah has started school, he takes a short nap in the car when I pick him up, and doesn’t nap at home anymore. I have to keep him entertained after that, and we usually head to the playgrounds around our area, if the weather is good. He also enjoys working on various craft projects, and always asks me, “What shall we do now?”

It’s been a tough month for Noah, and we pray that he will adjust to school quickly.

Happy 30th month, sweetheart! Please be a brave boy, and start having fun in school, okay? We love you more than you’ll ever know.
