C has been traveling for work quite a bit recently, and each time Noah asks me where Daddy Dearest is, I’ll tell him the answer, and add, “It’s okay. Daddy will be back soon.” He has heard this so often that he now tells himself, “It’s okay.” whenever I tell him that Daddy is away, or at work. (Yes, he asks for C a few times each day, even when C is in Singapore.)
Noah has been down with a runny nose since Sunday night, which means he wakes up a few times at night to whine. He was extra whiny the whole of Monday, so by Monday night, I had already decided that it would probably make my life easier if I let him co-sleep with me that night. Noah apparently had the same idea, because this was the conversation we had.
Noah: Can I sleep on mummy’s bed?
Me: Yes, but only if you promise not to wake up in the middle of the night.
Noah: Promise. I love you, mummy.
C was coming back on early Tuesday morning, and actually asked me to tell Noah that he would be home when Noah woke up in the morning, but I didn’t do it, because I didn’t want Noah waking up in the middle of the night, and asking for Daddy. I thought I was being clever, but erm, on hindsight, I think I should have, because Noah woke up at 6am, when the room was still pitch-dark, and was probably really confused to see someone else sleeping on the bed next to him.
Noah: (Sitting up in bed and looks in confusion at C sleeping next to him) Mummy, where’s daddy? (Panics) Mummy! Who’s that? Who’s that?
Me: It’s daddy!
Noah: Daddy? In India? Come back already?
Me: (Waking C up) Yes, it’s daddy.
Noah: Daddy?
C: You can’t recognise daddy after a few days? I’m uncle to you already, is it?
Noah: (Ignores C) Mummy, milk.
Guess we’re going to have to try harder to help Noah adjust to C’s travels!
