Review: Union Pondok Indah, Jakarta

We first heard about Union’s amazing Red Velvet pie from a friend in Singapore (I have no idea why she even knows about it), and decided to try it. One good thing about living in Jakarta is the ability to use GO-JEK to do many things, but we’ve only used it for ordering food so far. It’s definitely more convenient than getting stuck for ages in the infamous Jakarta traffic.

After enjoying the Union desserts for some time, we decided to try out their mains, and were pleasantly surprised to find that the food was as good as the desserts. We’ve eaten at the Pondok Indah branch twice so far, and thoroughly enjoyed our meals there. You can take a look at their menu HERE.

The first time we ate at Union, we had just spent almost two hours at Houbii Urban Adventure Park next door, so I was too hungry to remember to take any photos.

I ordered a grape and lemon sorbet drink called “Life is Good”. It was nothing to shout about, and I didn’t like that the grape bits were too large and kept getting stuck in the straws. Think I’ll try the Red Spinach juice next time, which came highly recommended by another friend. Don’t forget to order it with less ice, so that the drink won’t be too diluted!

N liked the butter that came with the complimentary bread basket, and ate quite a bit of bread while waiting for his food to arrive. He had the Mac and Cheese the first time round, and finished the entire serving on his own.

C and I shared the Porcini Mushroom Soup as a starter. N liked the bread stick that the soup came with, but didn’t want to try the soup. I thought the soup could have been creamier, and would have liked the mushroom flavour to be stronger, but C found it okay.

I had the Creamless Carbonara Tagliatelle with Pork Bacon and Parmesan, and it was pretty good. I can’t quite decide if I like this more than the Porcini Mushroom Tagliatelle with White Truffle Cream and Black Truffles, but both dishes were cooked well, with just the right amount of sauce and seasoning.

C ordered the steak on both occasions, as he’s been on a carb-free diet, and said the steak was nice and juicy. I had a small slice, and thought it was well-seasoned. Good value for money, and we now know where to go when we feel like having steak.

N’s Club Sandwich with Grilled Chicken, Pork Bacon, and Truffled Egg looked rather plain, but he finished most of the meat and egg on his own. He also liked the chips on the side, but which kid doesn’t like potato chips, right?

For dessert, I opted for a slice of the chocolate tart from the bakery, rather than something off their menu, as I’ve tried it before, and it’s one of my two favourite desserts from Union. I love chocolate, and I prefer the tart as it’s not as heavy as the cake.

As I was writing this post (it’s been almost two weeks since I actually started writing it), I started craving for the Porcini Mushroom Tagliatelle and Red Velvet Pie, so it was GO-JEK to the rescue. N said he wanted the Mac and Cheese too, so we both had our pasta cravings satisfied that evening. The photos of the food in takeaway containers aren’t pretty, but I can assure you that they tasted amazing.

I’ve heard that the lunch crowd at Union can get pretty crazy, and you’ll need a reservation for lunch, so I’m probably going to order in again if we don’t manage to make reservations for lunch or even dinner next time. Do try the Red Velvet Pie if you haven’t already done so. I promise you won’t regret it.
