Review: Smoulder

Dessert is my favourite part of the meal, and even when I’m too full to have it at the restaurant, I like to get a slice of cake to go. I’m not an adventurous foodie though, and my go-to dessert is usually something with chocolate.

When I heard about Smoulder, I was instantly intrigued. Bite-sized lava cakes? Does it mean I can eat more than one?

Smoulder specialises in baking bite-sized lava cakes with the finest Belgian chocolates. Our little molten pleasures are not too sweet and have zero preservatives. Whatever sweetness comes from the cocoa and fresh fruit we use, so no extra sugar is added. Not only can customers now enjoy lava cakes in the comforts of their own home (as opposed to dining in a restaurant), they can also savour it in 11 delectable flavours that most restaurants don’t carry.

Smoulder: softcore bakers (such a cheeky tagline!)

Bite-sized pleasures

I loved how they provided sporks, instead of the traditional spoon or fork, which made it so much easier to eat the lava cakes. I know it sounds like a silly thing to point out, but personally, I find that these things do matter, because they’ve clearly spent some time thinking about how customers will best be able to enjoy their cakes.

I brought these cakes along to a playdate, and we were so eager to sample the lava cakes that I forgot to take photos of some of the cakes. We really enjoyed the Signature Dark Chocolate cake, which was absolutely scrumptious. We warmed the cakes up slightly, and loved that the molten chocolate oozed out of the very first cake we cut into. The children were very eager to eat the cakes, so the Signature Dark Chocolate cakes disappeared really quickly, even before I could get a photo of them.

Yum!

Enjoying the chocolate cake

As you can see from the photos, both of Noah’s playdates enjoyed the cakes quite a bit, and even asked for more. Noah, on the other hand, refused to even try it, because he generally doesn’t like to eat anything at all. Sigh.

For those of you who like variety, you’ll be pleased to know that Smoulder has a wide selection of ELEVEN different flavours, including some which are infused with alcohol. This time round, I only got to try five of them, as I was sharing them with two other mummies, and I thought it would be nice for each of us to have one of the Signature Dark Chocolate cakes each.

The White Chocolate Matcha cake will probably appeal to fans of Matcha, as it is made with 100% real Japanese Green Tea. Those who like nuts can try the White Chocolate Pistachio cake, while others who prefer a little fruit in their cakes, can go for the White Chocolate Raspberry cake. Of the three white chocolate options that I sampled, I enjoyed the one with the raspberry best, as the tartness of the raspberry went quite well with the sweetness of the chocolate. However, if I had to choose only one of the five different cakes I tried, I’d definitely go for the Signature Dark Chocolate!

The size of the cakes makes it an excellent choice at kids’ birthday parties, or any kind of party, really. It’s a lot neater than having a big cake, which would need to be cut, and I think less mess is always a good idea. It’s a pity we are overseas this Christmas, or I would have considered getting these cakes for our annual Christmas celebration. They also cater for weddings and corporate events, and can even customise the cakes to your requirements.

Smoulder also has a 3-piece and 9-piece Baby First Month Favours package, which are a refreshing change from the traditional ‘red eggs’ gift sets. Each box contains 3 or 9 lava cakes of your choice, and will be personalised with your newborn’s photo and ribbon packaging.

If you’re keen to try the cakes before ordering them for your event, you can pop by either of their two stores to get some. I highly recommend the Signature Dark Chocolate, though the Milk Chocolate Hazelnut, White Chocolate Cookies and Cream, and their new Milk Chocolate Banana, all sound really delicious to me. I’m definitely going to try those flavours the next time round!
