Friday Flips #90: Owl Readers Club (Plus Discount Code and Giveaway!)

It’s no secret that we love books, and are constantly on the lookout for more interesting titles, so when I came across Owl Readers Club, I spent quite some time browsing their wide range of both English and Chinese books. I don’t think I’ve seen any other local website that offers books in both languages, so Owl Readers Club is really convenient as a one-stop online bookstore.

I particularly liked that customers could leave reviews of the books on the website, to help others with their decision-making process, because well, as the saying goes, you can’t judge a book by its cover, and it’s always useful to get feedback from other parents. Not all of the books have been reviewed yet, so even if you didn’t buy that particular book from Owl Readers Club, you can sign up and leave a review to earn points which can be exchanged for store credit. Reviews for ‘A is for Apple’

For my first purchase, I got a selection of English and Mandarin books for N and the twins. I chose board books for the twins, since they still can’t really be trusted to be careful with paperbacks, and the Chinese sound book was a no-brainer, because they loved the previous two Chinese sound books from the same series that they received from Flip for Joy!

For N, I couldn’t resist getting the ORC Snoopy Special Bundle Set, since we have been reading the Peanuts 5-Minute Stories, and N has been into “writing” and drawing his own stories recently. I thought the notebook would be perfect for his stories, though it was really tempting to keep it for myself.

I got mainly Chinese books for N, since he already has plenty of English books, and it’s really difficult to get good Chinese books here in Jakarta. I also picked ‘Going to the Zoo’, which translates the English and Mandarin text into five different dialects, because I wanted to practise my Teochew as well. The kids have no interest in hearing me struggle to pronounce the Teochew words so far, but they do like looking at the animals in the book!

Yay! New books!

I love how adorable this treehouse is!

Can you read in dialect?

I also really enjoyed reading ‘彩虹色的花’ with N, as the story reminded me of ‘The Giving Tree’ as well as ‘The Rainbow Fish’. N was attracted by the colourful illustrations, and didn’t complain about having to read a Chinese book with me at all, so I can safely say that it’s an interesting book.

Shortly after I placed that first order, I realised that we were going to miss my niece’s birthday, so I selected some books from Owl Readers Club as a gift for her. I really appreciated how prettily the books were wrapped, and the courier delivery was arranged within a few days, ensuring that my niece would receive her present on time. I guess that’s the benefit of ordering books from a local website, as opposed to Book Depository or Amazon!

My niece was really pleased with the books she received, and her favourite was ‘Ocean Animals’, as it had soft felt play pieces. I’m glad I got it for her, as it’s now currently sold out on the website! Her older brother really liked the book as well, and has been “borrowing” it from her regularly.

If you’re looking for more books to add to your home library, I highly recommend checking out the titles on Owl Readers Club! My only grouse is that quite a few of the excellent titles are out of stock, so if you’ve got your eye on a book, buy it before it goes out of stock. #buybuybuy
