We’ve been attending church here in Jakarta for a while now, and the best part of it is that N absolutely loves going for Sunday School here. I think it might be because the class size is really small, so he gets plenty of attention, and isn’t overwhelmed by other kids, but it’s so wonderful to hear him cheer when it’s time for him to go for his Sunday School lessons every week.
When we were in Adelaide, we lived near a Christian bookstore, but N was much younger back then, and I didn’t have the foresight to buy him some Christian storybooks, so I was really glad to see the Couchie books from Armour Publishing. At the moment, I think N can relate better to ‘Couchie Learns to Trust God’, as he hasn’t gotten to the stage where he wants to serve God.
‘Couchie Learns to Trust God’ & ‘Couchie Learns How to Serve God’
In ‘Couchie Learns to Trust God’, Couchie is faced with a problem: his best friend no longer wants to play with him. It may sound like a silly issue, but it’s a very real problem for young children, and I’m sure many children can empathise with Couchie. He decides to pray and ask God to let Lizzie play with him again, but is disappointed when God doesn’t seem to answer his prayer. Couchie’s mum encourages him to keep praying, and when Couchie finds out why Lizzie has stopped playing with him, he changes his attitude and prays a different prayer. Finally, when Lizzie is able to play with him again, Couchie thanks God for answering his prayers.
Personally, I liked that the story included a Bible verse, and had various short prayers which Couchie prayed. I think it shows children that prayers don’t have to be long and complicated, and that they can also turn to the Bible when they need some encouragement.
Couchie Learns to Trust God
In ‘Couchie Learns How to Serve God’, Couchie wants to serve God, but feels inadequate as he isn’t as talented as his friends. His pastor ropes him in to help out in church by giving him simple tasks, and shows him that anyone can serve God. Couchie learns that it is the heart that truly matters, and is excited that he can serve God in so many ways.
Couchie Learns How to Serve God
These two Couchie books provide simple and practical tips for young Christians, and I’m planning on getting the other three Couchie books for N, as they touch on really interesting topics as well. It’s a good change from the regular Bible stories, and provides a good alternative for those who are already very familiar with Bible stories.
