Friday Flips #34: My Pet Book

Even though we have plenty of books at home, I cannot resist going to the library to take a look around every now and then. I mean, there are so many books and authors to be discovered, and the best place to do just that would naturally be the library. I like that the librarians often pick out their favourite books and showcase them by putting them on the book displays, and that’s how I found ‘My Pet Book’.

I was drawn to the bright, bold colours on the cover of My Pet Book, and thought that the illustrations inside were really adorable. They remind me a little of The Jetsons, and if you know who I’m talking about, then you’re definitely from my era!

The introduction was interesting: a boy wants a pet, but doesn’t want a dog or a cat! All he wants is “a pet that’s easy”, and his parents suggested that he got a book as a pet instead. When the pet book goes missing, we follow the boy on his frantic search, and thankfully, he is reunited with his beloved pet book, after some brilliant detective work on his part.

Noah and I really enjoyed reading this book together, and the detailed illustrations definitely helped make the book more interesting. We spent quite a bit of time admiring them, and trying to spot the different types of pets mentioned in the text. Noah was most amused by the “ill-bred dog(s) that drink from toilet bowls”, and kept giggling each time we got to that page!

I do think it was a little difficult for Noah to grasp the concept of a pet book, because having a book as a pet just doesn’t make any sense, but the author told the story in such a natural and fun manner that it seemed perfectly logical to have a book as a pet instead.

My Pet Book has just the right amount of whimsical magic to capture the reader’s imagination, and I’ve been on the lookout for more books by the author ever since I borrowed this one. Do let me know if you’ve read any of his other books, and what you thought of them.

Happy reading!
