Even though we received the Timmy & Tammy DISCOVER Series: Lee Kuan Yew (read our review HERE) a while ago, Noah still picks it up from time to time, and asks us to read it to him. Thus, when Hwee Goh published her latest book, Timmy & Tammy DISCOVER Series: Singapore’s Wildlife Wonders, I figured that Noah would enjoy it too, and I was right!
On the day that we got the book, Noah was really excited, and kept bugging me to read it to him. After the first reading, he immediately asked to read it again, but we had to leave for school, so I promised that we could read it later. When he got home from school, he went looking for the book, and I had to read it to him again, just so that he would take his nap. That’s how much he liked the book!
The book is quite wordy, because it’s targeted at older children, but the photographs were really interesting, and captured Noah’s attention. Sometimes, he would stop me from turning the page, because he wants to take a closer look at some of the photos. In fact, for some of the pages, I would let him ask questions about the animals he saw in the photographs, before reading the relevant bits of information to him. It made more sense to me to let him dictate the pace, and to spend more time on the animals that he was more interested in.
As with all the other Timmy & Tammy books, there’s an activity at the end of the book, and in this case, it’s a quiz. Being an ex-teacher, I really appreciate all these little activities, because they help to reinforce what the reader has learnt from the book, and I found myself completing the quiz on my own too. I haven’t tried it with Noah, but I think that with younger children, they can be allowed to look for the relevant answers in the book, if they cannot remember what they’ve read. After all, the objective shouldn’t be to test, but to help them understand what they’ve read.
Singapore’s Wildlife Wonders
We visited the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum recently, and I was really glad that we had read this book before going there, because so many of the animals in the exhibits were featured in the book. I kept pointing them out to Noah, and there was even an interactive exhibit on mudskippers, which he was quite fascinated by. If you’re planning a trip to the museum, I highly recommend reading this book before and after you visit it, as it is really handy. Better still, bring the book along, and get your children to look for the animals featured in the book.
