Noah has been asking us all sorts of questions recently, so I’ve been on the lookout for some non-fiction books, to help me explain things a little better. I first discovered the Miles Kelly First Q&A series at NTUC, and thought they were a good deal at $3.90 each. A few days later, I saw them going at 3 for $10 at another bookstore, and bought a couple more. THEN, I discovered that The Groovy Giraffe, my favourite online remainder bookstore, was selling them too, and at an even better price! (What’s a remainder bookstore, you ask? Read our first post on The Groovy Giraffe here to find out!)
I spent some time browsing the selection of books on The Groovy Giraffe, and ended up getting a few more books to add to our ever-expanding home library. I’ve decided to split the books into two separate posts, and will be covering the fun and educational books I got this time round, plus a few more similar titles.
The Miles Kelly First Questions and Answers Series are good for preschoolers, as they present information in bite sizes. I don’t read every single word on the page, but summarise the bits that I think Noah would be interested in. Most of the time, he points to the different pictures and asks me about them, so I read the relevant sections to him. He does show more interest in certain animals, but the write-ups in these books are rather short, which means some of his questions may go unanswered. However, I do think they are good for a start, for him to get a broad understanding of certain animals.
The Groovy Giraffe carries a few other similar sets, and I’ve included the links to them at the end of this post, for your shopping convenience.
Learning about spiders and butterflies
Although Noah hasn’t learnt how to read yet, he loves books, and can sit through as many books as we are willing to read to him. When we are busy, he will usually sit quietly by himself, and flip through book after book on his own. I haven’t been actively teaching him to read, but I do think it’s a matter of time, before he learns how to read. I’m not very good with phonics, so I’ve been procrastinating about working on that with him, but there are plenty of sight words that he will also need to learn. I’ve been eyeing this Word Power! book whenever I see it in bookstores, but always found it too costly, so I was delighted to find it on The Groovy Giraffe, and at such a great price too! There’s also another one (Grade One) targeted at older children, and I’ve included the link to it at the end of this post, just in case you want to get that as well.
Before you think I’m a tiger mum, let me assure you that I’m not. Noah has tons of fun books that we read together, and I try my best to cater to his preferences, even if it means I’m reading about cars, trains, and other vehicles, all the time. He absolutely loves the Disney Cars series, so I thought this Disney Cars Racing Story would interest him. Plus, it’s an activity book as well as a story book, so it’s great value for money.
When the books were delivered, Noah was so excited as I pulled out one book after another, and when he saw this one, he exclaimed, “Look! It’s McQueen!” and proceeded to sit down immediately with it. Most of the activities are beyond him at the moment, but he was happy enough to flip through them, and talk to me about them.
Busy flipping through the book (please ignore the mess behind)
Another really fun book I got this time was the Whizzy Winders Little Racing Car Book, as it comes with a play track and toy. Noah played with this a lot, to the extent that the car “broke down”, from being wound too much. C took it apart to fix it, but couldn’t manage to do so, and threw away (!) the cute little wind-up car. Noah has been using his normal cars on the track since then, but I think it was definitely a lot more fun when the wind-up car could race around the track on its own. If you do get this book, be careful not to wind the car up too much! There are three other Whizzy Winders titles, and I’ve included them at the end of this post as well. I’m so tempted to get another one!

Playing with the wind-up car and track
I placed my order on Wednesday evening, and the books were delivered on Thursday, at noon. I don’t know about you, but I sure was impressed by how quickly they processed the order, and got the books out to me! Do note however, that some of these books are out of stock, while others have very few copies left, so do place your orders quickly if you are keen, before they run out. I’ve been buying books from The Groovy Giraffe since they first started in 2013, and I’ve noticed that some of the more popular titles don’t get restocked very quickly, while some have completely disappeared from their store, so if you like it,
you shoulda put a ring on it order it. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
