My dearest baby boy,
I just realised that I haven’t written you a love letter in some time, mainly because you keep me so very busy every day!
Right now, you’re taking a nap, which gives me some time to rest, and to start on this letter. There’s so much I want to say to you, and I doubt I’ll be able to finish this letter before you wake up from your nap. (Yup, you sensed that mummy had some ‘free time’ and woke up right on cue there.)
(Continued three weeks later.)
Christmas came and and went about two weeks ago, but I don’t think you have any clue what Christmas is all about yet. I’ve been reading a very simplified version of the Nativity story to you recently, although you’re more interested in flipping the pages, and pointing out the baby/cow/sheep/donkey/star on the different pages. It’s okay, because I’m just glad that you enjoy sitting and reading with mummy! You do know how to put your hands together when I tell you that we’re praying, and you’ll occasionally say ‘Amen!’ when I ask you to repeat it after me, which really amuses us.
Your grandparents came for a week to visit you during the Christmas period, when papa was also off from work, so we had a good time sightseeing with them. Truth be told, they were probably more keen to stay in the apartment all day long to play with you, than to see the tourist attractions, but we went out anyway. Papa booked a separate serviced apartment for them, and the staff was kind enough to allocate them the apartment right next door to us, so we could just knock on the shared bedroom wall to see if they were awake in the mornings, and send you over to play with them for a while. You loved all the
attention you got from them, and went around asking to be carried by them, and also made them do silly things to entertain you. When they left, papa and I had a tough time trying to discipline you, because you started throwing tantrums when we refused to give in. It’s amazing how fast you got used to all the pampering and spoiling, and for a while there, we were really worried that you had become a spoilt brat who screamed and cried whenever he didn’t get his own way. Thank goodness you’re back to normal now, able to play quietly by yourself while we eat, instead of begging to be carried all the time.
These days, you’re full of funny surprises, and your days are all about playing, as it should be. You’re walking a lot more now, so you love it when papa or I ‘chase’ you around the apartment. You giggle as you toddle away as quickly as you can, and when you come looking for me, I love to jump out from the room to scare you, which makes you do a double-take, then laugh even more. Papa and I love watching you laugh, because you’ll fall to the ground from laughing too much, as though it’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen, even though I’ve done it five times in a row.
Just the other day, you suddenly decided to start walking backwards while you were in the kitchen watching me cook your pasta, and you kept taking these tiny shuffling steps back, like you were trying to do the moonwalk. I have no idea where you learnt that from, nor where you learnt how to crawl backwards on your tummy.
Sometimes, when you’re having trouble falling asleep after I nurse you, I’ll hold you against my side with my right hand, and pat you gently. That usually helps you to fall asleep, but every now and then, you’ll actually start patting my hand WHILE I’m patting you, and on those occasions, I know that you’re wide awake and being cheeky. Sure enough, you’ll turn onto your belly, sit up, give me a mischievous grin, and scuttle off down the bed, in search of papa in the living room. Those are the nights which you’d cry the most too, because we would refuse to play with you, and you get really cranky because it’s way past your usual bedtime. Your latest record was 230am! Papa and I were utterly wiped out by the time you fell asleep, so please don’t do it again, okay?
Wide awake and being cheeky on New Year’s Eve/Day/Night
When you wake up in the mornings or after your nap, I sometimes pretend to be still asleep, just to see what you’ll do. (Papa is usually still really asleep, and you always smack him really hard to wake him up.) You’ll crawl right up to me, lean over, and press your lips tightly against mine, to ‘wake’ me up by kissing me. Your bright, happy smile when you see me open my eyes, followed by your sweet ‘Hi!’ is really, the best thing to wake up to, and I definitely prefer being woken up this way, as compared to how you wake daddy up.
I love how affectionate you are, as you are so generous with all your hugs and kisses. You’ll drop whatever you’re doing to come and give us a hug if we ask you for one, and I love how you walk right into my arms for a hug whenever you see me waiting with my arms outstretched. Sometimes, as we’re walking around with you strapped to my chest in the Manduca, you’d look at me, reach up and hold my face with your two hands, push yourself up, and plant kiss after kiss on my lips, complete with the ‘muak muak’ sounds that you make. I don’t know what I did to deserve them, but I will definitely cherish each and every single one of these kisses, because I know that one day, you’ll be too grown up to kiss me like that.
I tell you daily that I love you, and even though you don’t know how to say it back yet, you show us just how much you love us, through your actions. You’re so very precious to us, baby, and we’re so thankful that God gave you to us. Looking forward to witnessing whatever new mischief you come up with next!
With all my love, Mama (or Mummy, as you now prefer to call me.)
